Sitka Center Music Fellowship
& Cohort Residency
I am very excited to announce that I have been granted an inaugural Music Fellowship at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology to curate a cohort of musicians and composers to co-create, commune, and rest.
April 16-30, 2025
ABOUT THE RESIDENCY
In nature, in orchestras, in choruses, in jazz combos, in rock bands—anywhere there is music, there is a harmony and counterpoint between individual expression and collective input. The blooms of a field of flowers reflects their own individual wills (or destinies) a much as it embodies the earth, pollinators, compost depositors, rain, sun, heat, cold, and invisible elements we can only feel like courage, innovation, and passion. Any work of music requires the same from all who step forward to create it. I am passionate about music, creativity, vision and collaboration. I believe in the power of nature, silence, contemplation, awareness, and rest. The Sitka Center for Art and Ecology has invited me to gather a cohort of musicians to experience these magics together.
The Sitka Center for Art and Ecology provides time and space for place-based reflection, inquiry and creation at the intersection of art and ecology. It is near and dear to my heart. It is a place of peace, expansion, and deep nurture. I am thrilled to be able to share this experience with musicians I trust and admire to join my evolving community of collaborators of Synchrolicity Collective.
During our two weeks together 6-8 artists will spend the first week co-creating a new body of work—a collaboratively composed collection of scored spoken word, and an ensemble with words written by me. At the end of week one we will record the individual pieces and the ensemble. And I suspect we might do some jamming (and maybe recording) on some songs during that time too. Week two is entirely yours to do with what you like—rest, create, explore, dream. That week is your time. Along the way we will make space for building community while supporting individual breathing room.
Artists will receive $1000 in financial support for the residency. Some travel stipend may also be available. Artists provide their own food (I am working on getting a small food stipend for each of us.) A few group meals may be provided.
The cohort will be comprised of music-based artists who have an established composerly practice, who want to build community, who need space to breathe, who have outlets to share what we create, who thrive in both collaboration and isolation, who hold a reverence for nature, and who hear music in silence.
Please fill out your information below. This process helps me curate the cohort, and the information you provide will be used for promotion and fundraising. Don't forget to scroll inside the questionnaire frame to see all the questions. 5-7 people will be selected by January 2025. Thank you!
