There came a moment where I realized I simply couldn't do romance anymore. It had left me empty and achy and neglecting the things in life that were critical to my survival, or essential to my joy. This is a tremendous opportunity and perfect timing for me to work with the composers, actors, and musicians to see how the work lives in three dimensions. And I am among a cohort of 16 artists who are stunning talents. It's both a wonderful artistic and community opportunity.
Licity Collins — Multidimensional Genre-Busting Artisttag:www.licitycollins.com,2005:Post/72343802023-06-28T21:13:14-07:002023-10-16T07:51:17-07:00Moving In My Sleep
This song is FUN.

My newest pop/rock single “Moving In My Sleep” is now out and ready for your listen-on-repeat plesasure.
Here’s why: Authenticity, Loyalty, Art, Sanity, Democracy, and Humanity.

1— I LOVE MY EMAIL LIST so much. I share my true self there and the exchange I get from the community is so satisfying to all of us. My email list and Love Circle members deserve my full attention.

2— I give my best content to my LOVE CIRCLE of monthly donors and to my Email List community. I share videos, personal stories, scoops and all the good stuff. That content is gold to me. I share it with the people who financially and materially support my work. Giving it away for free on social media isn’t fair to them, and doesn’t feel good to me.

4—Social Media likes and follows is all about what everyone else thinks of you. This, along with televised music competitions has contributed to the degradation of originality and the rise of Copy Culture, which I am wholly disgusted by. It is killing art. I refuse to be complicit. As an artist (not a “creator” which is a label for those making product to maximize modern social commerce and has nothing to do with art), my originality is core to all I am and do. Originality is essential to humanity and the planet. Art cannot be created for approval. Life can not be lived for Likes.

3—“Just post authentically.” I’ve been told. This is an oxymoron for me. “Posting” is an inauthentic act for me. It’s not something I would normally be at all inclined to do. I’ve tried for years and it’s just not my style. I failed at MySpace, Ning, Linked In, Facebook, Twitter and now Instagram. I don’t have the personality suited to this environment. It’s not who I am. I need deeper connections. I need to live as me.

4— I don’t believe, nor have I seen evidence that “posting” and “sharing” (broadcasting) aspects of our lives or thoughts to 50-500 (or thousands) of people at once has created a healthy psychological impact on people. It has though, in my opinion, created incredible amounts of psychological harm, most of which have not been measured, and are barely noticed. I notice. I have always been one to notice the cost and impact of cultural trends. And when something is wrong, it takes courageous individuals to step up and say “I won’t be a part of this any longer,” and leave. I have deiced to be one of those individuals.

5—Nearly every time I have mentioned to someone that I am considering leaving social media, they try over and over to convince me to stay. They counter every feeling I have with a desperate argument as to why I should not leave. It’s downright creepy. This in itself is evidence that something is wildly amiss.

6— Social Media has been shown to erode the development of our species. Social Media companies have displayed a blatant disregard for their participation in the degradation of honesty, truth, safety, democracy, and mental stability. The currency of clicks and likes has done immeasurable damage. We have become puppets in a deadly theater. I refuse to participate in this. Humanity is suffering and I protest.

So, I exit.

I feel joyful about this.

Please join my email list.
My heart is there. My newsletters are truly my authentic self. I love writing my newsletters. That is the place that makes me happy, brings me joy, and where I share all that matters to me. It is where I tell you the real details about the work I am doing. If you join my Love Circle, you will get a monthly video where I share from my studio, garden, and life about my favorite music, latest projects, and everything else that is going on. I very much want to stay connected with you. Please know that.

I hope to see you there.
I will miss the pictures of your kids, gardens, hikes, and art. Feel free to email them to me any time.

In the midst of the pandemic separation I was paired with Jane Sanders, a textile portrait artist in the UK who sews (yes, sews) portraits of musicians. We were matched up for a unique collaboration. It is a part of the "Long Distance Art" project of the Social Distancing Festival, curated by Nick Green in Canada. It was a wonderful way to discover connection as we all grappled with separation.

I wrote "The Leaving" specifically during COVID times to reflect on the losses and on my own powerful experience of my dearest friend contracting the virus in late March (she is recovered and doing well now). My friend is also a textile artist which added an extra layer of meaning to the project. On a hot day in early June, I sat in my garden and scrawled the story out for Jane, longhand on plain white paper—which is how I write out so many things as they are in process—songs, ideas, discoveries, lists, life. I put two versions in an envelope and sent it across the country, across the ocean to Jane. It took weeks to arrive in her hands, but when it did, she did something magical with it.

Click here to see the collaboration. It's very cool if you do as the curator suggests, and play the video so you can to hear the words as you read them on my body, face, and hair throughout the portrait, it brings it close to you, multi-dimensional, as this collaboration truly was. You can also see the source photo of me that was used to create the portrait, And—you'll also find links to Jane's amazing other work which will BLOW YOUR MIND. You can also see the other powerful collaborations that are a part of this wonderful coming together of artists from around the world—to remind us, as I am always saying, that we are all connected—all of us, always.

May our art touch your heart.
Big Hug,

"How do we love those who hate us?" An audience member asked me.
I replied—"You just do. Do it because they are a part of you."
Here is a still from my "Love Leads" live broadcast last Friday.

Hello World,

The last two months have been intense. The last week has intensified the intensity.

I have to send you some courageous love right now.

I am going to keep this short and clear—something you can easily re-post, pass along to others, and remember as you make choices about how you can do your part to implement the changes we clearly need.

Love has to lead.
I talked about this at my live broadcast last Friday. If you were there, you felt the power of the love even over the stream. If you were not there, we all missed your presence.

Fear or Love?
We are seeing (again) the difference between what happens when we are led by fear and when we are led by love. When fear leads, our needs compete and people die. We believe it's us or them, you or me. When love leads, all of our voices, all of our lives are valuable and included. People strive to keep one another alive. We believe in "and," "all," and "we."

We have taught our police to be afraid.
Every time a police officer is called to do their job, they are walking into a bad situation. That cannot be easy. (Yes, I have compassion for everyone. That's how love works.) We all know, when we are scared, we make bad decisions. If the police are coming from a basis of fear, they will make the situation worse, much worse. And when the police make bad situations worse, people can die. It is the charge of our police to make bad situations better. This can only be done if they operate from a basis of love. This can only happen, if they see their job as an act of love.

Sensitivity training will never be enough to change things. Our police (yes, our) need re-training of the fundamentals of how to police. They need to be shown how to police from a place of caring for each member of their community, from a place of love. They need to have their natural fears addressed and their unnatural fears extricated, not inflamed. They need to be shown how to make situations better—by acting from a place of love.

When we call our stay-home orders "lockdown" we are evoking images of prison that most of us are very lucky not to be in. We are inciting unnecessary fear in people. We see the results. People are naturally afraid of "lockdown" and act out against it. Why have we not referred to this as "caring for our community"— as an act of love?

During this pandemic, if we are forced to choose between economy or public health—we will hurt each other. And we are. Fear says our needs compete, that only one segment of us can have our needs met. And fighting (and more fear) is the result. Love shows us the ways to include both, in fact, all, of the needs of our community into our solution to any crisis. The result is....that's up to us, right now.

It takes Courage.
We have to do better—every one of us, in every one of our actions—all the time.
We have to ask ourselves, when are we coming from love and when are we coming from fear? In everything. We have to ask ourselves when and why are others coming from fear? We have to ask ourselves how can we help them come from a place of love? We are all connected. Fear lives in each one of us. So does love.

It's not naive.
It's not political.
It's not preaching.
It's not bullshit.
It works.

Martin Luther King Jr. taught that there are two forces operating in the world. Fear and Love. Nothing has made that truth more clear than this time.

You know this.
Deep in all of us—we know this.
Love has to lead.
Now.

Big Hug,

The arts and culture editor of the VC Reporter wrote a wonderful post-show review of "Licity's' Love Fest" and audience members also posted that the show was a unique and memorable treat to their hearts.

by Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer

Ojai-based singer/songwriter Licity Collins brought her guitar, her notebook and some friends to Namba Performing Arts Space on Feb. 15. It was the day after Valentine’s Day, but the good vibes continued to flow, as the artist hosted her very own “Love Fest” featuring herself along with troubadour Rags Rosenberg, Ventura musician Henry Stewart and trombonist Stan “Skabone” Middleton.

Collins — as talented a storyteller as she is a singer and guitarist — shared true tales of love, loss and heartache, many punctuated with moving musical numbers. Rosenberg, a traveling folk bard who sometimes calls Joshua Tree home, gave insight into the people and events behind the songs he played. Collins and Stewart teamed up to perform a duet of Stewart’s hauntingly beautiful ballad “Sleeping in the Graveyard.” She was also joined by Middleton for a spell, with the Barrelhouse Wailers horn player bringing a jazzy touch of trombone to Collins’ folk rock numbers.

While the chocolates handed out to the audience were a treat indeed, the sweetest gift was joining the musicians for genuinely heartfelt moments where poetry and pathos informed the playing. A perfectly delicious Valentine for local music lovers.

Also, this pretty fantastic instagram post by an audience member really summed up the night in a powerful way.

Some pics from a fantastic night of music last weekend, the Love Fest. It was put together by and featuring the inimitable @LicityCollins who brought together a cadre of musicians perfect for this post-Valentine’s evening of stories, music, chocolate, love and laughs.??

? Licity played, sang, read some of her remarkably written stories (I’d buy the collection!) and wrapped us in her authentic embrace, relating to the audience through vulnerability and joy. The delight she feels in sharing herself so honestly is palpable and irresistible. Icing on the cake was the addition of all the “old white guys”—as she laughingly/lovingly put it—whose musical talents and writing shone, as well. If you’re local, check out Licity at her next big show on 4/3 at the @ojaiundergroundexchange She’ll make you feel like you belong and you’ll leave with a spring in your step and a smile on your face!

"Licity Collins seems intent on sidestepping conventional constructs."

by Bliss Bowen

Listening to pop music (i.e., pop, rap, blues, country, rock, soul, etc.) throughout our lives, we’ve been trained to expect verse-chorus-verse-chorus compositional structures, with occasional bridges and/or changed-up keys to intensify emotions. Rare is the song that stops the music with a spoken phrase delivered for dramatic effect, and interrupting a concert’s musical flow with spoken word often propels audience members toward the exit. Jazz and classical music move more freely beyond those strictures, but in the pop universe musical momentum lags when those compositional expectations are upended.

Ojai artist Licity Collins seems intent on sidestepping conventional constructs. Her 2019 album “Love Courage Yes: Live at the Underground Exchange” blends spoken word with folk and rock numbers performed with a band. She performs at the Blue Guitar Wednesday night.

Collins is more of a journalistic poet than a singer; her pitchy vocal phrasing is shaped mostly by the emotion rather than the rhythm of her words. As she explained to NPR during an interview last year, as an artist she doesn’t differentiate much between music and poetry. Growing up in metropolitan Washington, DC, Collins played cello in a youth orchestra while absorbing influences and arrangement ideas from rock music. That attention to milieu still informs her creative sensibility.

“Love Courage Yes” offers live renditions of songs such as “Staring at the Dark” and the fingerpicked “Turn” from her first album, 2018’s “One Girl Town,” with diaristic interludes that alternate between amusing (“Applause is Weird”) and self-analyzing (“Regrets,” “The Hotel Room,” about the shady, dispiriting place she occupied when her mother died that made her “feel like a mole”). Those shifts can be off-putting if spoken word isn’t your thing, but Collins projects confidence in tandem with shared vulnerability, and her delivery and themes — choices made, connections missed, losses sustained — lend themselves to audience interaction. More than giving a show, she seems most interested in reaching headline-battered listeners searching for uplift: “When you come face to face with love, the most courageous thing you can do is say, ‘Yes.’”
Licity Collins — Multidimensional Genre-Busting Artisttag:www.licitycollins.com,2005:Post/58831832019-09-06T10:37:32-07:002019-09-06T10:37:32-07:00The Love Circle
Licity has launched a new membership program called The Love Circle.
